Our system is designed to be easily installed and arrives with everything required to get up and running—all you need to provide is a standard 1"-14 marine antenna mount, a power source, and a Philips screwdriver.
We offer a range of cable lengths for you to choose from, so you’ll need to measure first. You’ll also need to decide on how to power your system. Finally, you might decide to purchase our preconfigured WiFi router, or use one of your own.
Once you’ve made these decisions, you’re ready to order from our online store, where dropdown menus make it easy to indicate your choices. By following this (short) pre-order guide, your Coastal Marine WiFi system will arrive customized straight out of the box!
Our system is powered by 110-240VAC or 12/24VDC. This source powers the network box, the booster, and the included WiFi router. (If you provide your own WiFi router, you must power it separately.)
We supply a barrel plug connector with 12" of wire and exposed ends that can be screwed down into contacts providing 12 or 24VDC. (We ship a distinct model of network box for each voltage; in the rare case that both voltages are available, you'll be limited to the selection you make with your order.)
We supply a North American style AC adapter that accepts 110-240VAC (so it can easily be adapted to use other styles of outlet) and outputs 12VDC. For convenience, we also supply the barrel plug connector, which if used must be connected to a 12V supply.
Write down the power source you'll be using: AC, 12VDC, or 24VDC.
The hub is where our network box (4x4x1.5in / 10x10x4cm) is installed and connected to its power source. The network box also connects to the cables leading to the booster and to the cabin's WiFi router.
Because onboard power can be a bit dirty, our network box has built-in surge protection using an NTC thermistor and a 1.5A fuse. We ship two replacement fuses with each system.
Make note of your chosen hub location.
Since WiFi performs best when there's a clear line of sight between devices, we recommend mounting our booster from between 15 and 30 feet above the water.
This range puts the booster near level with most marina WiFi installations (on average), and at the higher end of the range avoids most obstacles between the booster and the hotspot.
You can put the booster anywhere within this range that makes sense to you—it doesn't have to be on the mast. Wherever that is, you'll need to provide a standard 1"-14 marine antenna mount (metal is highly recommended) with:
You'll be running a single ethernet cable (which carries both power and network traffic) from the hub location to the booster. The cable we provide is weatherproof, UV resistant, and can withstand bends of 1in or greater.
We supply this cable in lengths of 25 (the default), 50, 75, 100, and 150 feet. If your measurement is very close to one of these lengths, we recommend buying the next length up—you may have more slack to store, but at least you won't come up short!
Once you've decided on a booster location, measure and write down the length of outdoor cable you'll need to run between the booster and the hub.
The router we provide is a TRENDnet consumer model WiFi router, preconfigured with your choice of network name and password. (You can also order the system without a router and use your own.)
Ideally, the router should be placed in your cabin at the approximate center of the area in which you'll be using WiFi devices like phones, laptops, etc.
On most vessels (75' or smaller), this requirement is less important since the router's signal should reach the whole length of your boat; in this case, it may be most convenient to place the router close to the network box, even if that's nearer to one end of the cabin than the other.
The router is best placed out in the open but can be put in a thin-walled (plastic or wooden) cabinet if necessary. You'll be running a single ethernet cable from the router to the hub. The cable we provide for this purpose is an indoor cable and can withstand bends of 1in or greater.
We sell indoor cables of 3 (the default), 10, 25, and 50 feet in length.
That’s it—you’re ready to order!
Your custom Coastal Marine WiFi system will arrive with clear and easy installation instructions. If you have any questions, we're available to help Monday through Friday, 9-5PST.
